The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Trump Executive Order 13780, better known as the Muslim Travel Ban. This is a gross mischaracterization regarding the intent of the order. The President was attempting to protect our national security by severely restricting travel from terrorist nations with inadequate (or no) vetting mechanisms. The EO lowered the number of refugees that could enter the U.S. in 2017 to 50,000 and suspended entry of Syrian refugees indefinitely. Exemptions could be made on an individualized basis. The initial EO 13769 issued on January 27, 2017 included nations that were on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism from the Obama Administration. It may or may not be a coincidence that these are majority Muslim nations. There is a segment of the Islamic faith that promotes terrorism and several of the nations on the travel ban are training grounds for Islamic terrorists. Obama Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson later added three additional “countries of concern” to their list of sponsors of terrorism. The original Trump EO chose to restrict travel from the list as compiled by the Obama Administration: Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. To no one’s surprise, the EO was immediately challenged and a temporary restraining order was issued by the liberal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals halting implementation of the ban. President Trump signed a revised version (EO 13780) on March 16, 2017 that made several deletions and additions. Added to the ban were North Korea and Venezuela both of whom are not Muslim nations. The Dems and liberal Left continue to refer to the EO as a “Muslim Ban” and accuse the President of xenophobia. The President knew that the issue would eventually be resolved in the U.S. Supreme Court. By a vote of 5-4 the President’s travel ban was upheld as “Constitutional” with the majority opinion being written by Chief Justice John Roberts. The minority opinion, written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, expressed the sentiments of most liberals. She accused the President of being motivated “by anything other than animus.” In addition she stated that the proclamation caused pain and suffering upon countless families and individuals.
The President is committed to national security and his actions are completely within his authority as designated in the Constitution. Paragraph (f) of Title 8 reads: “Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens into the U.S. would be detrimental to the interests of the U.S., he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.” The President was totally within the framework of the Constitution for the sake of national security. This is just another example of the level of anti-Trump hatred within the Left. I’m relieved that we finally have a president who is truly putting America first and a SCOTUS that is fair and unbiased.
