The announcement that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring has thrown the Democrats into a state of panic. They are vowing to block any judge nominated by President Trump to replace Kennedy until after the mid-term elections. As with everything Trump has attempted since elected, he faces stiff resistance from the Democrats. Appointees to the Supreme Court must be approved by the Senate and currently the Republicans hold a one vote margin. Considering those Senators up for election in November, it is highly unlikely that the Republicans will lose the majority. Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell could force a vote on a nominee long before the mid-term elections. The Dems are hysterical over the fact that President Trump campaigned on a promise to take the Supreme Court in a more conservative direction. Trump’s first selection, Justice Neil Gorsuch, has thus far voted with the conservative justices on the Court. A few Supreme Court Justices who were believed to be either conservative or liberal displayed a completely different attitude once on the Court. The President has compiled a list of 25 candidates for the Justice position and will be carefully screening those candidates before submitting a name. The Dems and their allies in the media fear a conservative Justice will overturn the Court ruling legalizing abortion. The infamous Roe vs Wade ruling eliminated federal prosecution for clinics performing abortions. States can regulate the procedure by imposing health standards or adding additional requirements, but they must allow women access to safe abortions. There is no reason to believe that the Court’s previous ruling will be overturned. Supreme Court Justices assume their role with an extreme sense of responsibility. They truly understand the magnitude of each decision. Regardless of a Justice’s political beliefs, they examine each and every case on its merit giving consideration to prior rulings.
Although it is still legal in all states, the Trump Administration has attempted to remove federal funding for Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortions in the U.S. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was a controversial figure. She was a pioneer in advancing the cause of women’s reproductive rights. She was also associated with the controversial eugenics movement that promoted sterilization and abortion as a means of eliminating the unfit. Abortion is an issue that evokes strong emotions on both sides. I don’t think it could or should be criminalized again simply from a standpoint of safety. At the same time it is irresponsible to use it as a means of birth control. There are much simpler and safer means available to prevent pregnancy. Chuck Schumer and the other Dems need to chill and let the President select his nominee before declaring their resistance. You can run but you can’t hide. The President will have his nominee approved; you can pay me now or pay me later!
