The greatest civilizations in history have all seen their deterioration and ultimate destruction from within. The year 2020 has been the most tumultuous in memory, presenting a number of threats to the existence of our American society. The coronavirus nearly destroyed our economy and took over 150,000 American lives. The virus robbed us of the freedom to move about at will and created an atmosphere of fear among a previously self-confident population. As if trying to recover from the invisible enemy wasn’t enough, we had the police killing of George Floyd and several other police shootings of unarmed black civilians. These incidents led to angry outbursts manifest as extensive rioting, looting and burning of businesses. In Minneapolis alone initial damage estimates were around $500 million. Wrath and frustration among the black community is understandable but many of the businesses burned to the ground were black-owned. Some of these individuals had invested their life’s savings and devoted years of work into building a successful business only to be destroyed in a matter of minutes by senseless misdirected anger. This type of destruction served no useful purpose and did not help the cause of racial justice nor the memory of those who died at the hands of police. ALL police shootings are required to be followed by a thorough investigation to determine if the use of a firearm was justified. Many police officers spend their entire careers without ever firing their weapon outside the firing range. The most recent police shooting was the one involving Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Mr. Blake had an outstanding arrest warrant and did not cooperate with police when they attempted to take him into custody. Perhaps police could have handled the incident less aggressively, but we don’t know all the details of the situation. That is the reason an investigation must be undertaken to determine if the police actions were justified. This incident suggests that we desperately need police reform, but we also need respect and cooperation on the part of the civilian population. In any police confrontation there will never be a “good outcome” when civilians don’t cooperate and follow police directions. This is NOT a contest and you will NOT win!
Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina sponsored a thoughtful police reform bill that the Democrats refused to address. Senator Scott has known discrimination and has been in many confrontations with police (because of his race). He should know the necessary requirements for police reform, but his Democrat colleagues do not wish to address the issue until after the election. The Democrats are convinced that they will win the White House and both chambers of Congress from which they can dictate whatever they desire in the way of laws. They also believe the current chaos and violence hurts the President and favors their election odds. The President wants to be known as the law & order president and if re-elected he will do whatever is necessary to restore peace and stability to the cities. The Democrats, on the other hand, appear to be the party of appeasement. That type of policy only encourages more violence and rioting. I think we have a clear choice on November 3, we can continue the self-destructive behavior that will eventually destroy our society or we can seek social justice by reforming police training and improving relations with the community. The liberal Democrats are wanting to defund the police at a time when they are needed more than ever. If the Democrats gain control of the country we could literally be on the eve of destruction.
